In a statement, Abdullah Alsharbatly explains how he came to receive a 30-day suspension from the FEI.

A few days ago, it was announced that Abdullah Alsharbatly is barred from competing in any tournaments until the end of September. In accordance with FEI Jumping Rule 259.1, which took effect in 2026, the 44-year-old rider representing Saudi Arabia was suspended for one month because he received two “Jumping Recorded Warnings” within a year. We reported on this. Such a warning is issued whenever blood is found on a horse resulting from contact with tack, equipment, or external forces. Alsharbatly received a warning on June 4 at Spruce Meadows and another on August 27 in Gijón.

Statement on Instagram

Now, in a statement, Alsharbatly explains how this bleeding occurred. On Instagram, he writes the following:

“First of all, I’d like to make it clear that I respect the importance of rules that protect the welfare of horses in our sport.

The horse in question has a unique natural jumping style: he crosses his legs during the jump. It was in this context—and only in this context—that the incidents involving the straps around the fetlocks, which are intended to protect my horse from injury, led to the two Jumping Recorded Warnings.

I had absolutely no intention of causing my horse any pain or discomfort. In fact, the opposite was true—I wanted to protect him.

My horses aren’t just athletes—they’re my companions—and their health, well-being, and happiness will always be my top priority.

To tell the truth, I’m not going to get involved in any discussions on social media that involve false accusations.

I would like to thank all those who reached out to me with kindness, understanding, and support.

“Abdullah Al Sharbatly”
