The situation in France is coming to a head. About 200 horses were supposed to be safe from the wildfires in the region at the well-known equestrian facility, the Grand Parquet in Fontainebleau. But now they’ve had to be evacuated from there as well.

According to the French magazine Grand Prix, the Grand Parquet equestrian center in Fontainebleau had taken in about 200 horses. They came from other stables affected by the wildfires in the region. But then a fire broke out near the equestrian center, and the horses had to be moved elsewhere again.

To ensure that everything ran smoothly, the road connecting the city and the equestrian center had been closed. According to Grand Prix, the evacuation was successful. All the horses were safely relocated to nearby stables.

The town of Fontainebleau is not currently affected. There has not yet been an official evacuation order issued by the authorities.

Background Information

Fontainebleau is located south of Paris. A fire broke out here on Sunday, which is why the highway and train connections had to be temporarily closed. According to a report on ARD’s Tagesschau at noon today, 800 hectares of forest have already been destroyed, and the fire is not yet under control.

Arson has not been ruled out, and an investigation is underway. The police have mentioned a “large number of fire sites within a radius of just 1,000 meters,” which they say points to arson.

Major tournaments are held regularly in Fontainebleau. In 2009, the facility hosted, among other events, the European Eventing Championships. The European Pony Championships and other Nations Cup tournaments have also been held here, including the dressage competition in April of this year. The tournament was widely praised for its excellent organization and lively atmosphere.
