Abdulrahman Alrahji Celebrates the Victory of a Lifetime at Spruce Meadows
The Ride of His Life: Abdulrahman Alrajhi with Ventago.
Photo: Facebook.com/OfficialSpruceMeadows In the end, only one pair completed both rounds of the Atco Queen Elizabeth II Cup without any faults, securing victory: Abdulrahman Alrajhi riding Ventago, a horse originally trained by Sven Fehnl and Tim Rieskamp-Goedeking. A huge success for the 30-year-old Arabian—and in a way, also for the Vogel/Will team, since David Will trains the Arabian show jumpers.
Richard Vogel was also in the competition. The fact that he still managed to advance to the second round of the top twelve—despite two faults in the first round while riding Gangster Montdesir—speaks volumes about just how tough a challenge Santiago Varela presented to the riders today. In the second round, Vogel and his winner from the previous week had a knockdown. In the end, they still finished eighth.
Things went better for Ireland’s Daniel Coyle riding Farrell. The pair had one knockdown in the first round, but remained clear in the second, finishing in second place. They were the fastest of five pairs that finished with one knockdown. The others, in that order, were Daniel Bluman (ISR) on Corbie V.V. (0/4), Kyle King (CAN) on Kayenne Z (4/0), Lillie Keenan on Kick On (4/0), and Robert Whitaker riding Vermento (4/0).
