Ears are important sensory organs for horses. Photo: EQUI PAGES/Jan Tönjes Pricked ears are as much a part of horses as the quick gallop in the opposite direction as soon as danger lurks. Horses’ ears can hear much more than human ears. On the one hand, they perceive a higher frequency spectrum and on the other, they hear louder than the human ear. This is due to the anatomy of the horse’s ear.
While a lot of attention is paid to the horse’s eyes, the sense of hearing plays a major role in handling – who doesn’t talk to their horse, click or praise, “braaav”? However, the ears do not receive the attention that is paid to the eyes when they are watery or seem cloudy … in everyday handling.
Free online lecture on the ears of the horse
In an online lecture, Prof. Dr. Gerald Schusser, University of Leipzig, talks about “Ear health in horses: 1. ear health with normal hearing in horses. 2. behavioral disorders in horses with hearing loss or deafness.”
On Thursday, June 11, the lecture can be followed free of charge via Zoom video conference from 6.30 pm. It is part of the “Exciting science and practice around the horse” lectures organized by the Society for the Promotion of Equine Science (GWP).
