The Society for the Advancement of Equine Science (GWP) has a new chairperson: Dr. Astrid von Velsen-Zerweck was elected as the new chairperson. She succeeds Dr. Ludwig Christmann, who had previously announced that he would not seek re-election.

Dr. Astrid von Velsen-Zerweck, who holds a doctorate in agriculture, is one of the founding members of the society, which is now 31 years old. The Chief Stable Master of the Marbach State Stud was supported by the GWP itself while she was working on her dissertation.

New Structure on the GWP Board of Directors

However, it apparently took some persuasion. According to the GWP, her already heavy professional workload was the main obstacle to her candidacy. It was only after responsibilities on the executive board were redistributed that von Velsen-Zerweck—described in the press release as “a figure with excellent connections in both academia and practice”—agreed to run.

Prof. Dr. Clemens Wollny will take over the vacant seat on the Executive Board. The agricultural scientist and horse breeder has been a member of the jury for two years now; the jury evaluates bachelor’s and master’s theses as well as dissertations annually and decides on the awarding of the GWP grants.

The remaining members of the Executive Board were re-elected:

  • Prof. Dr. Ellen Kienzle as Vice Chair

  • Prof. Dr. Uta König von Borstel

  • Christine Felsinger

  • Dr. Julia Steinhoff-Wagner

  • Dr. Michaela Weber-Herrmann

  • Dr. Katharina Wiegand.

With the exception of the candidates’ own abstentions, all votes were unanimous.

Dr. Ludwig Christmann will remain with the GWP

Ludwig Christmann, who worked for the Hanoverian Association for decades, is not leaving the equestrian research community entirely. The general assembly appointed him honorary chairman. Christmann led the GWP for twelve years—longer than any of his predecessors—and will continue to serve on the board in an advisory capacity.

Science as a Bridge to Practice

Since its founding, the GWP has seen itself as a bridge between university research and practical horse management. Each year, it recognizes academic theses on topics related to horses and supports emerging researchers with awards and scholarships. According to the association, the continued positive growth in membership numbers demonstrates that this work is resonating with the public. However, the general meeting did not provide specific figures.
