Jacques van Daele held various positions within the world of dressage. He was an international four-star judge, technical delegate, and steward, and as such, he was also an important part of the FEI’s education and training system. He served in an official capacity at six Olympic Games as well as at various World and European Championships. In Germany, he was a familiar sight at the warm-up arena of the CHIO Aachen, where he served as chief steward for many years.
Incidentally, van Daele got into horses through the police. After completing his studies in forensic science, he began working as a trainer for the Belgian police’s horses. In the 1980s, he started judging and worked his way up to become an FEI 4* judge. Until 2025, in addition to his duties as a steward, he also served as a judge at national and international competitions.
In Belgium, he also served as chairman of the dressage committee for four years and as chief steward at the national level. In 2022, he was named “Sports Personality of the Year” by Horse Sport Vlaanderen.
Ronan Murphy, the FEI Director of Dressage, said: “Jacques van Daele was a highly respected figure in international dressage—valued not only for his expertise and professionalism, but also for his passion for our sport and the way he supported those around him.”
He was level-headed, fair, and always willing to listen, share his experiences, and support the growth of others. His commitment to the rules, the sport, and above all, the well-being of the horses shaped his work as an official. Jacques’ wisdom, kindness, and friendship will be sorely missed by the entire dressage community.”
