The jumping competition in the Piazza de Siena had to be decided in a jump-off.
Richard Vogel six seconds faster in the jump-off in Rome
Richard Vogel competed for Germany in the jump-off. The winner of the Grand Prix of Aachen a few days earlier had been awarded the decision by Becker. With his French stallion Gangster de Montdesir by Kannan, Vogel tried to make up for his first round penalty of eight points in the jump-off. It was a jump-off à la Richie: fast, no, super fast! The German pair needed 39.99 seconds in the jump-off. Patricio Pasquel and the stallion Chakkalou PS, who is registered with the Oldenburg-International Jumper Breeding Association, crossed the finish line for Mexico after 45.91 seconds. But, unlike Vogel, without a knockdown – Viva la Mexico, victory for the Central Americans.
Five double zeros
Great Britain came third behind Mexico and Germany with eight faults. Adrian Whiteway and Chacco Volo delivered one of a total of five double clear rounds.
It was already clear after the first round: it was going to be close in the traditional stadium in Rome. The German team with Christian Ahlmann, Sophie Hinners, Jörne Sprehe and Richard Vogel were in second place together with three other nations with four faults.
The two German riders were particularly convincing in Rome: Sophie Hinners and Iron Dames Combella by Cornet du Lys and Jörne Sprehe with the Toulon son Toys remained clear in both rounds. Christian Ahlmann and the Zangersheide stallion Applebridge Tag Z had to accept one fault in both rounds. Richard Vogel and Gangster de Montdesir opened the Nations Cup with eight faults, but improved in the second round and remained clear.
Satisfied conclusion
“It was a shame that Richard Vogel dropped a pole in the jump-off. Of course we would have liked to win, but second place is worthy of all honors and we congratulate the Mexicans,” said national coach Otto Becker after the decision.
