The Stadl-Paura Horse Center regularly hosts tournaments and breeding events. Today there was a report of an outbreak of influenza there.

The Stadl Paura Equestrian Center has posted a banner on its website stating that “several cases of influenza” have been confirmed there. At the end of last week, one horse was diagnosed with a fever. This horse and its stable neighbors were sent into quarantine. The vet has taken swab samples. The other horses were also monitored by regular temperature checks.

It turned out that seven other horses had an elevated temperature. They were also brought to the quarantine stable and the planned event for the last weekend was canceled. During the weekend, more horses developed a fever, but “most of them had no or only minor clinical symptoms”.

Today, Monday, April 13, we received the results of the swab samples, which showed that the horses sampled were infected with influenza.

As a result, the working equitation competition planned for the coming weekend was also canceled and schooling at the equestrian center was suspended. Another stable has been cordoned off as a precaution. The horses’ temperatures are measured twice a day.

Ten days ago CDI 4*

The weekend before last, a well-attended CDI tournament took place in Stadl Paura, where German participants were among those competing. We were informed that no official information was given to the participants about the outbreak of the disease. However, the temporary guest boxes for the competition horses are also physically separated from the permanent stables for the horses on site. Furthermore, since the EHV outbreak in Spain, it has been an FEI regulation that the temperature of international horses is regularly measured and checked.

Infection of competition horses with the influenza virus is also unlikely because the incubation period for this viral disease is very short. As a rule, only one to three days elapse between infection and the outbreak of the disease.
