Since early September, strategic targets in Saudi Arabia have been under attack by the Houthi movement from Yemen. As a result, the final Global Champions Tour and League event of the season was moved from Riyadh to Verona.

The tense geopolitical situation in the Middle East had already caused some show jumpers to be stranded in Doha at the beginning of the year. Over the past 14 days, the airport in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, has been attacked several times by the Iran-aligned Houthi movement. As a result, 17 people are reported to have died and around 330 injured. The German Foreign Office has issued a travel warning. The airport is currently closed.

Verona Instead of Riyadh

Riyadh was originally scheduled to host the final Global Champions Tour and League event of the season from November 18 to 21. However, as the French website“Jump-Off.eu” reported on October 14, Global Tour organizers have decided to move the tournament from Riyadh to Verona, Italy, due to the current situation. We are currently still awaiting official confirmation from the Global Champions Tour.

At the Global Champions Tour playoffs—which also feature the Global Champions Tour Super Grand Prix for the season’s champion—a total of 11.25 million euros will be awarded: approximately 10 million for the Global Champions League Super Cup and 1.25 million for the Super Grand Prix.
