Photo: CHI Basel/Katja Stuppia The jumping competition for the Golden Drum of Basel goes over 1.55 meters and is one of the most important competitions of the tournament and a classic in show jumping. Steve Guerdat, Richard Vogel, Julien Epaillard and many more would have liked to have entered their names on the list of winners. But in the end, a pair that would have achieved good odds in a bet stood right at the front: Josch Löhden with his ten-year-old Hanoverian EIC Schabernack.
They were the last pair in the jump-off. Löhden made it clear at obstacle one that he intended to take no prisoners on this day. He went full attack, but unfortunately didn’t quite get there. He was saved by his gray horse, who added an extra canter jump and still didn’t make a mistake. They were able to make up for the rhythm disturbance as the jump-off progressed. They crossed the finish line in 33.16 seconds. The victory.
However, it was a close one, as Hans-Dieter Dreher and his now 17-year-old Baloubet du Rouet son Vestmalle des Cotis had already clocked a bomb time of 33.31 seconds, which was not quite enough in the end. So it was a German double success at the top. Third place went to Austria with Katharina Rombach and Colestus Cambridge.
Josch Löhden was highly satisfied: “When you make it into the jump-off, you naturally want to give it your all. I had an incredibly good horse. That helps enormously.” Don’t tell me!
About EIC Schabernack
EIC Schabernack is a ten-year-old Cornet Obolensky son out of a Quidam de Revel-Grannus dam. He was bred by Frank Plock. The EIC in his name is an abbreviation that can usually be found on Max Kühner’s horses, and in fact this gray horse was also previously presented by the Austrian by choice from Bavaria and his long-time rider Helmut Schönstetter.
As a six-year-old, Schabernack was a strong seventh in the final at the World Championships for Young Show Jumpers, still with the Slovakian Peter Kopecky in the saddle. Since 2023, at the beginning of his seventh year, he was then ridden by Kühner and Schönstetter. Josch Löhden has been riding him since autumn 2024. In addition to the Neumünster Grand Prix, they also won the 1.45-metre Grand Prix (CSI2*) in Peelbergen at the beginning of December.
