One of the sporting highlights this weekend is the first-class CSI5* in Hong Kong. Things got off to a good start from a German perspective - even if Kevin Staut stole the show from Richard Vogel this afternoon.

For a long time, it looked as if Richard Vogel and his Holstein stallion Claudio’s 55.11 seconds would be enough to win the afternoon highlight (time difference) of the CSI5* Hong Kong, a 1.50 meter time jumping competition with prize money of just under 57,000 euros. But then came Kevin Staut and the ten-year-old Swedish mare Kannonqulan, a daughter of the newly crowned KWPN Stallion of the Year, Kannan. The mare is a real speed specialist who has already won five time trials since Staut took her over in 2025 and has been placed at the front several times. The French-Swedish duo took almost a whole second off Vogel and his Casall son. The clock stopped at 54.34 seconds.

This meant that Staut was the winner, Vogel came second and the Norwegian Johan-Sebastian Gulliksen on Harwich VDL was delighted with third place (0/56.90). Gulliksen thus confirmed his good form in recent weeks, where he had already ridden from World Cup success to World Cup success.

Dreher’s opening success

The other German participants had nothing to do with the ranking this time. However, they had already put in a good performance the day before. The first five-star winner of the tournament was Hansi Dreher. He won the opening jumping competition with his 14-year-old veteran Cous Cous. The Holsteiner son of Cachas left the rest of the field behind him in the jump-off of the 1.50 meter competition.

The closest pair was the French Zandor son Unick du Francport (18) with England’s legend John Whitaker (70) in the saddle. They crossed the finish line after 35.94 seconds. Third place went to France with Roger-Yves Bost and Ballerina du Vilpion.

Also placed: Michael Viehweg and the Austrian Comme il faut son Carell with two clear rounds in sixth place.
