Lord Charmeur, the stud horse from Celle, is no longer alive

The Celle State Stud has announced the death of the state stud stallion Lord Charmeur. For several weeks, veterinarians and stud employees fought to save the life of the five-year-old KWPN stallion, but to no avail. The reason is the same one that prevented the stallion from competing in the World Championships for Young Dressage Horses, even though he had qualified: laminitis.

Statement from the Celle State Stud

Even the people of Celle don’t know how this could have happened. They report:

“For reasons we couldn’t explain, Lord Charmeur developed laminitis, which was closely monitored and treated by our veterinary clinic and our farrier. When his condition didn’t improve after two weeks, we transferred him to the clinic for even more intensive treatment. There, the medical staff fought to save him for four weeks.

We would like to express our heartfelt thanks for the tremendous efforts of the entire team at the Grossmoor Veterinary Clinic, who fought with the utmost dedication to save Lord Charmeur. Unfortunately, even there, they were unable to prevent load-induced laminitis from developing in his other three legs. Despite their very best efforts, we ultimately had to let him go.”

The loss is “a catastrophe,” according to Celle. “Lord Charmeur was a stallion with exceptional natural potential and prospects that were second to none.” But the loss is so devastating not only for sporting reasons, but also from a breeding perspective. “We mourn the loss of a stud in whom our breeders had placed the highest expectations. They recognized his qualities early on and made very good use of him last season. This makes it all the more sad that his journey has now come to an end far too soon.”

The State Stud extends its explicit thanks to Lord Charmeur’s owner, Heike Pleines. Although the breeder from the Rhineland did not breed Lord Charmeur, she did breed his sire, Lord Europe. Lord Charmeur was born in the Netherlands. A. Wessels-Haselhorst is the breeder and paired Heike Pleines’ breeding coup, Lord Europe, with Joey V.O.D., a daughter of Charmeur and Fürst Heinrich.

The dam line is highly successful in the Netherlands: the third dam, Kilucienne by Michelangelo-Farn, produced, among others, the highly successful sires UB40 by Jazz and Davon by Blue Hors Hotline. Numerous successful sport horses have emerged from more distant relatives, not only in dressage but also in show jumping, such as Eurocommerce Lanapoule, owned by Billy Twomey.
