The entries for the League of Nations stage in St. Tropez

After Spruce Meadows comes St. Tropez. In Canada, the German team impressively demonstrated that it didn’t become world champion for nothing. In the overall standings of the FEI League of Nations, Germany also leads with 230 points, ahead of Great Britain (225), Ireland (205), France and Switzerland (190 each), Brazil (180), the U.S. (175), Belgium (165), Italy (160), and the Netherlands (155).

Only the top eight of these ten teams will compete in the finals in Barcelona. Germany has therefore practically secured its spot in this long-standing event, which takes place on the first weekend in October.

The German pairs

Nevertheless, Otto Becker is sending a team to France that includes two current and one former team world champion: Marcus Ehning and Richard Vogel, fresh off the Aachen team, and Janne Friederike Meyer-Zimmermann, who was part of the team that won the last World Championship team gold 16 years ago in Kentucky—before this year’s victory. The fourth member of the group is Maximilian Weishaupt, who was part of several Global Champions League victories this year with the Riesenbeck International team. All four riders have each entered two horses for the Grand Tour.

For Marcus Ehning, those are Priam du Roset and world champion Coolio. The latter is likely to be the first choice given the form he showed in Aachen. The 15-year-old Swiss Plot Blue son Priam du Roset competed this year in events including the Nations Cup in Hickstead; however, Ehning withdrew him after the first round. His last show was the Opglabbeek Grand Prix the week before Aachen, where the gelding had one knockdown.

Janne Friederike Meyer-Zimmermann’s list includes Van Tastic and Cellagon Cascais. Van Tastic is a nine-year-old Mecklenburg horse by Van Halen Z (breeder: M. Solesvik) that Janne trained herself and who took a strong fourth place in the Grand Prix in Gijón at the end of August. It was his first Grand Prix over 1.60 meters, which shows just how much talent he has, but also that he is still inexperienced. The Saxon DSP stallion Cascais by Colestus (breeder: D. Grubitzsch) has also been under Janne’s training since he was a youngster. This year in Doha, he placed well several times at the 1.60-meter level; he also finished sixth in the Hamburg Grand Prix and third in the Cannes Grand Prix, among other results. However, he has not yet competed in a Nations Cup either.

Following the success of United Touch S and Cloudio at Spruce Meadows, Richard Vogel is counting on Gangster Montdesir—the World Cup finalist who recently won in Brussels — in St. Tropez; alternatively, the nine-year-old Holstein stallion Cardentos by Cardento is also on his list. He presented him for the first time earlier this year. Cardentos was trained by Marten Witt. The Witt family is both the breeder and the owner of the gray horse. He has won Grand Prix events over 1.45 meters and speed jumping competitions over 1.50 meters with Vogel, but has not yet competed in a 1.60-meter class.

Maximilian Weishaupt On the one hand, it has the former Holsteiner Association stallion Zuccero HV who had already gained Olympic experience riding for Sweden with Rolf-Göran Bengtsson when he joined Weishaupt in 2025. The two quickly hit it off; as early as July 2025, they placed fourth in the Global Tour Grand Prix in Monte Carlo, and this year they didn’t leave a single tournament without a ribbon—but with several Global Champions League Wins. However, Zuccero has not yet competed in a Nations Cup with Weishaupt. Weishaupt’s alternative is his longtime number one, the 15-year-old Bavarian DSP mare Omerta Incipit, with whom he was part of the League of Nations team in Abu Dhabi last year.
