Jan Vleugels, international show jumper and licensing commissioner for the Oldenburg International Show Jumping Horse Breeding Association, dies at age 64

Jan Vleugels served as a licensing commissioner for the Oldenburg International Show Jumping Horse Breeding Association since its founding and played a key role in shaping the development of show jumping horse breeding. This is according to a press release from the Oldenburg Association. Horses with potential, quick reflexes at the jump, and modern show jumping types with an international outlook were his favorites.

Jan Vleugels: From Belgium to Oldenburg

A native of Bossut-Gottechain, Belgium, he initially worked at the Wäldershausen stud farm and later, together with Evelyne Blaton, at the facility owned by Paul Schockemöhle’s sister in Telbrake. Vleugels represented Belgium as a show jumper in Nations Cups for juniors and young riders. He worked as a training rider and was known for his calm seat and his respectful handling of horses. Until the very end, he rode one or two horses every day.

Involvement with “OS”

Vleugels regularly hosted breeding inspections at his Belgian facility. For his contributions, he was awarded the Silver Pin of Honor by the Oldenburg Association. He was regarded as a reliable point of contact and discussion partner within the breeding community. Vleugels is survived by his partner, Evelyne Blaton, and his son, Dennis.
