There are worse ways to celebrate your birthday than leading a victory lap with an old buddy. That’s exactly what happened today to Gerrit Nieberg and his prodigal son, Blues d’Aveline.

On his 33rd birthday, Blues d’Aveline secured the victory for Gerrit Nieberg in the qualifier for the Peelbergen Grand Prix, a 1.45-meter speed jumping competition. In doing so, the pair finished ahead of Harrie Smolders riding his ten-year-old rising star, For Chacco TN. So we’d like to offer our congratulations twice—on the victory and, of course, on his birthday.

For Gerrit Nieberg, this is a significant achievement, even if it is “only” a CSI2* in Peelbergen and not the Nations Cup in La Baule. At his owner’s request, Blues d’Aveline has spent the last few years in the care of Max Kühner. However, the now 14-year-old gray has never been as successful as he was with Nieberg. The other day, the phone rang, and on the other end was the owner of the Baloussini son, asking if Nieberg would take him back. What a question!

Today, the two of them were able to show that bringing them back together was the right decision.
