This was announced by Pferdesport Deutschland in a press release, according to which several ponies had exhibited abnormalities early on Sunday morning during the Bavarian inspection for the “Preis der Besten”. As a result, the event was canceled on Sunday morning.
What exactly happened at the inspection for the Preis der Besten in Munich-Riem?
For investigative reasons, no further details on the exact course of events will be published. However, it is clear that the incidents concern animal welfare. The Olympic riding facility in Munich-Riem is one of the most important show venues in Bavaria. Tournaments, inspections and licensing take place here.
According to the vet in charge, Dr. Michael Zeitelhack, only a few ponies were affected. He assessed the general condition of the animals as good overall. As things stand, no consequential damage is to be expected. The background to the incidents is currently unclear.
The police have started an investigation. The responsible district veterinary office is also involved. The incident led to the Bavarian judging for the “Preis der Besten” being canceled. The “Preis der Besten” is a nationwide competition for the best young athletes.
Dr. Dennis Peiler, Chairman of the Board of the German Equestrian Federation (FN), reacted promptly. “We are deeply shocked by the incidents in Munich-Riem. We condemn these actions in the strongest possible terms. The protection and welfare of the horses and ponies entrusted to us is our top priority. It is very important to us that the incidents are fully investigated and punished accordingly,” he explained.
Thomas Schreder, Managing Director of the Bavarian Riding and Driving Association, also commented clearly on the events in Munich. “We are shocked and stunned by the events of last night. For us, the welfare of the ponies and horses is paramount. There was therefore no alternative to the decision to cancel the inspection. We are working closely with the responsible authorities and are doing everything we can to fully clarify what happened.”
