The Dutch Warmblood Breeding Association has licensed 46 dressage stallions. A wiry grandson of Isabell Werth's three-time World Cup winner Weihegold was named KWPN Champion Stallion 2026. There was also plenty of other German genetics in 's-Hertogenbosch.

Before the KWPN Champion Stallion 2026 was announced, nine premium stallions were initially named. They were descended, for example, from Emmelie Scholten’s Grand Prix stallion Desperado (KWPN by Vivaldi), Kingston Blue Hors (KWPN by Toto Junior), Kyton (KWPN by Ferguson), O’Frederic (Oldenburg by For Romance), Opoque (KWPN by All at once) and Vitalis (KWPN by Vivaldi). Vitalis’ son, Vamos Junior, a Westphalian by Hotshot by Hotline, is a full brother to Vamos Amigos, Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour’s team world champion from 2022. In the end he was the reserve champion stallion.

A stallion was later added to the auction via a wild card. He was also in the running for the title of “KWPN Champion Stallion 2026”. The dark bay, Tony Gold, also a Westphalian, has a well-known dam. And an outstanding granddam. The champion stallion is sired by Toto Junior by Totilas. His dam Aweih by Apache is also the dam of the former Westphalian licensing champion Extra Gold. Aweih is a daughter of Isabell Werth’s Olympic silver medal winner in Rio, the Oldenburg mare Weihegold. The new KWPN champion stallion is therefore closely related to Isabel Freese’s Olympic finalist Total Hope and his half-brother Sir Weihbach, Special Gold, who is currently growing into Grand Prix sport with Katharina Hemmer, or Weihronce, dam of the 2025 Louisdor Prize winner, Viva Gold.

“Tony Gold has a lot of breed, youth and a strong, athletic build. He was particularly convincing in the transitions of the basic gaits, moved with a lot of balance and leg technique and is also genetically very well built,” concluded licensing inspector Bart Bax.

KWPN Champion Stallion 2026 Tony Gold costs 345,000 euros

These genetics plus the title of champion cost the Brouwer stables 345,000 euros. The premium stallion Trinellowaard took second place in the price ranking. The chestnut, a son of the Oldenburg stallion Extreme U.S. by Escamillo out of a Florencio dam, cost 165,000 euro. Ti Sento, a Negro grandson by Kjento-Krack C, cost 115,000 euro. (to the auction results)

Among the other licensed stallions were some who had already received their breeding license in Germany. These included the Trakehner premium stallion Top Star U.S. by Kwahu, the gray stallion Super Saint AEH by. St. Emilion, premium stallion of the Oldenburg licensing 2025, Fairlas by Fair Deal or the Hanoverian Escador by Extreme U.S.

47 of the three-year-old young stallions born in 2023, which begins with the letter T in the Netherlands, did not achieve the hoped-for class goal of “licensed”.

In an initial version, we incorrectly wrote that the champion stallion had been sold to the Swedish stud Lövsta. We apologize for the error, which we have corrected.
