The big show jumping tournament organized by the Lippe-Bruch Gahlen Riding Club on the first weekend of January is traditionally a highlight in the show jumping calendar in this country. Once again this year, there were seven advanced (S) level show jumping competitions alone, as well as numerous competitions for young riders and amateurs. Some well-known names took the opportunity this weekend.
Last year’s winner Sören Suppert had his top horse Can Tici with him. German runner-up Tom Schewe was also at the start, as was three-time Derby winner Toni Haßmann. In addition, the Merschformann family and Angelique Böckmann, multiple medal winner at the German Show Jumping Championships and Christian Ahlmann’s right-hand woman in horse training for many years.
However, none of those mentioned had a chance of getting past Benjamin Wulschner this year. He was in the saddle on the 13-year-old Irish mare Castle Camiro, a Balou du Rouet granddaughter by her sire Sligo Candy Boy, who he took over from Marcel Marschall in the fall of 2024. The pair have often placed and won in 1.45 meter show jumping competitions. But this was their first victory in an S*** show jumping competition over 1.50 meters.
Seven pairs reached the jump-off, including last year’s winner Sören Suppert on Can Tici, Tom Schewe with Aaron Z, Angelique Böckmann in the saddle on Sheeran WL, Marc Boes on Union Jack JPS and Juliane Rölfing in the saddle on Come and feel O NRW.
Of these seven, four pairs remained clear. Wulschner’s winning time was 38.20 seconds, almost a second faster than the runner-up. The defending champions, Suppert and his Holsteiner Cornet Obolensky son, finished in 39.11 seconds. The third fastest clear was Toni Haßmann on the Westphalian Mylord Carthago son Hero (40.24), followed by Marc Boes and Union Jack JPS. JPS stands for Julius-Peter Sinnack, who not only bred this nine-year-old stallion, but also his sire, European Champion United Touch S.
Juliane Rölfing could boast of having delivered the fastest four-fault ride with her Comme il faut daughter. But even without the knockdown they would not have caught up with the winner. The clock stopped at 38.20 seconds. Tom Schewe on Aaron Z, owned by Jos Lansink, and Angelique Böckmann in the saddle on the ten-year-old Codex One son Sheeran WL followed suit.

Vogel second in Wellington
The Saturday highlight of week one at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington was less crowded in terms of numbers. 22 pairs took part in the 1.50 meter jumping competition. Richard Vogel alone rode three horses, all more or less new to him. With the ten-year-old Quizas van’t Hulsbos, it was the second international course after Thursday, where they had eight faults. This time the Emerald son remained clear in the six-rider jump-off and his time of 31.626 seconds was enough for second place behind the Colombian Pablo Mejia Villa on Caramia (30.591). Vogel had recently taken over Quizas van’t Hulsbos from the Devos couple. Both Pieter Devos and his wife Karoline Devos-Poels have already shown him in competitions. However, this was his first competition over 1.50 meters.
Vogel then rode a ten-year-old Holstein gelding called Upton, who had previously been presented by the Spaniard who came third behind him today in Wellington, Diego Perez Bilbao. Bilbao rode Upton in the USA in show jumping competitions up to 1.40 meters and was placed several times. However, the gelding has been owned by Vogel & Will Equestrian GmbH since last April. In October 2025, Vogel rode the Uriko son in three jumping competitions in Tryon. Now he presented him over 1.50 meters for the first time. Two knockdowns and a lot of experience brought them to the finish line.
Vogel’s third horse was the ten-year-old Hanoverian Komet. The Kannan son has been owned for almost a year by Pegase Equestrian BV, which is backed by Deborah Mayer, the patron of the Global Champions League team “Iron Dames”, for whom Vogel’s partner Sophie Hinners rides. Last year’s best Nations Cup rider (after clear rounds) was victorious several times with the gelding up to 1.45 meters, then Vogel took him over. He has also ridden him over 1.60 meters at various shows in the USA in the summer and autumn, but has yet to place. There were none today either. Komet also came out of the ring with eight faults.

Alsharbatly victorious in Doha with old acquaintance
After Janne Friederike Meyer-Zimmermann’s Holstein mare My Lady Lavista was victorious in the opening jumping competition of the CSI4* Doha yesterday, the rider from Schenefeld saddled her again today in the most important jumping competition of the day over 1.50 meters with jump-off. This time, however, the pair gave up.
Things went better for the Arabian Abdullah Alsharbatly. He had saddled the now 17-year-old Oldenburg stallion Boeckmanns Lord Pezi Junior, whose name is no coincidence. The Lord Pezi son was bred by Werner Meyer. Hartwig Rohde and Marco Kutscher brought him into international sport. The latter was placed with the stallion at Global Champions Tour competitions, among others, before the Brazilian Pedro Veniss took him on. After a brief interlude with Sergio Alvarez Moya, Abdullah Alsharbatly bought Lord Pezi Junior in November 2024 and has always shown him himself since then. The pair have already won Nations Cups. So it was no surprise that they also led the lap of honor today.
Eleven pairs had qualified for the jump-off, ten competed and eight rode two clear rounds. Among them were some “big names” such as Scott Brash on Hello Mango, Max Kühner (AUT) and Global Champions Tour Super Grand Prix winner Abdel Said (BEL).
It was Kühner who came closest to the winning time. He presented the KWPN gelding EIC Quantum Robin V, a 13-year-old son of Carambole that he had taken over two years ago. He had previously been ridden by the Irish rider Matt Carrigan and had already achieved 1.55 meter placings when Kühner took over. Today’s second place with two clear rounds is likely to be one of their best results together to date.
Sienna Charles and the now 16-year-old Chacco-Blue daughter Stardust took third place in Great Britain. The OS mare, bred by Lewitz Stud, was victorious with Sienna’s brother Harry Charles in the London 2021 World Cup show jumping competition, at the Saut Hermès and in Knokke. Sienna took over the reins in the fall of 2022 and six months later, at just 20 years old, contributed to the British team’s second place at the Nations Cup in Falsterbo. The two are therefore a well-rehearsed team who were delighted with third place today, beating both Abdel Said on the Hanoverian mare Zasou and Scott Brash with his eleven-year-old Untouchable daughter Hello Mango.
